Wildlife You May See While Staying in Kodiak, Alaska: The photo is of a bear in the woods

Wildlife in Alaska often feels larger than life, but on Afognak Island, it can also feel surprisingly close. At Afognak Wilderness Lodge, guests stay within Afognak Island State Park, surrounded by old-growth spruce forest, protected coves, salmon streams, rugged shoreline, and quiet bays where animals move naturally through the landscape.

Accessible only by floatplane or boat, this remote lodge in Alaska offers one of the most immersive Kodiak Island lodging experiences for travelers who want more than a standard vacation!

Alaska Wildlife You May Encounter in the Resort Area

Watch for Kodiak Brown Bears

The Kodiak brown bear is one of the most iconic examples of wildlife in Alaska and one of the largest bear subspecies in the world. Found only on the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago, these remarkable bears can reach impressive sizes. Males can be up to 1,500 pounds and 10 feet tall while standing on their hind legs.

At Afognak Wilderness Lodge, guests can experience Kodiak brown bear viewing right from the lodge area during June and early July. One featured excursion follows the Waterfall Trail, a guided hike about half a mile inland along a river with a pink salmon run. Guests looking for an additional bear-viewing adventure can also ask about the Fly-Out Katmai Tour add-on, a one-day excursion with a guided bear hike in Katmai National Park.

Look for Whales, Sea Otters, and Sea Lions

Some of the most memorable wildlife in Alaska is seen from the water, and Afognak Wilderness Lodge gives guests a front-row view of the surrounding marine habitat. Orcas may travel and hunt in pods, while finback, humpback, and minke whales can be seen during their migration from June through the end of August.

About a half-hour boat trip from the lodge, a nearby rocky island is home to large numbers of sea lions, where guests can watch them roar, play, rest on the rocks, and sometimes gather with their pups.

Pair Wildlife Viewing With Guided Fishing Trips

At Afognak Wilderness Lodge, wildlife viewing often unfolds during our guided fishing trips. The remote Alaska location means guests rarely encounter many other boats, leaving more room to take in the wildlife. Depending on the day, guests may target Pacific halibut, lingcod, rockfish, or salmon while also watching for sea otters, eagles, whales, porpoises, and other wildlife along the way.

The lodge’s custom catamarans are designed for both fishing and sightseeing, with full walk-around decks, enclosed heated cabins, and onboard bathrooms!

Spot Bald Eagles, Puffins, and Coastal Birds

Birding is another striking part of the wildlife experience at Afognak Wilderness Lodge. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the Kodiak Archipelago! Along Afognak’s rugged coastline, bald eagles can often be seen diving and soaring near the cliff sides or perched high in the surrounding spruce trees.

Puffins are another guest favorite during late spring and summer. On a nearby rockface, Tufted and Horned Puffins can often be seen nesting from late May through the end of August.

Plan your stay at Afognak Wilderness Lodge and experience wildlife in Alaska from one of the most immersive Kodiak Island lodging destinations!
