Afognak Wilderness Lodge boasts one of the most unique lodging experiences in the United States, with a beautiful temperate climate and a thriving ecosystem to match. As many of the rainforests throughout the world have been subject to commercial and industrial logging, our land has remained preserved in excellent condition, with protected bays and incredible wildlife to witness.

The implementation of Afognak Island State Park was the major protective factor. We have many visitors marvel at the atmosphere around our wilderness lodge, and invite you to learn more about our climate and ecology before you book your stay.

About The Pacific Temperate Rainforests

Afognak Island is located in the Kodiak Island Borough, which is apart of the Pacific Temperate Rainforest region. This region is famous for its year-round mild climate, and our island specifically is surrounded by the moderating waters of the Gulf of Alaska, which has the warm Japanese Current circulating around it. The moderate temperatures and relatively high rainfall makes natural disasters such as fires extremely rare, which allows our virgin mono-stand of Sitka Spruce and assorted animals to thrive in unspoiled wilderness.

There are only 7 temperate rainforest ecosystems in the entire world, and only one in North America. Afognak Island is a part of the Northern Pacific Coastal forests, which span through the northern Prince William Sound, Kenai Fjords, north-eastern Kodiak Islands and western Cook Inlet. In the Northern Pacific forests, the connection between the sea and land play a powerful role in sustaining the diversity on the Kodiak Islands. Our local pristine forest is home to the largest stand of Sitka spruce which provides a sheltered habitat for Kodiak brown bear, Roosevelt Elk, Sitka Deer, Land Otter, Martin and Red Squirrels plus spawning streams for salmon & trout.
