And the place to stay in this beautiful wilderness is at the Afognak Wilderness Lodge, which is the only lodge or residence in the Afognak Island State Park, located in the Kodiak Island Archipelago in Southwest Alaska – about 250 miles south of Anchorage.

Top Saltwater Fishing at Afognak Island

Probably the top saltwater fishing target in Alaska for fishermen is halibut, with more 1.5 million pounds of halibut harvested each year. In fact, more than 65 percent of the total harvest of halibut comes from the Kodiak Islands area. Halibut taken by most anglers are generally 15 to 20 pounds in weight, but more than 150 pounds are frequently caught. And if you are feeling really confident, a fish must weigh at least 200 pounds to qualify for Alaska’s trophy fish program. These fish are in record abundance in our area and are available almost year-round, although generally the summer months are the best time to fish for them.

Maybe Lingcod is more your saltwater fishing style. Lingcod are not actually cod but the largest member of the greenling family. These fish are predatory by nature and will be a nice challenge for even an experienced sport-fisherman. These dark brown/copper fish can grow to more than 80 pounds and measure 60 inches. Just be careful of those sharp teeth.

No matter what your taste in saltwater fishing catch, we are the premier fishing lodge in all of Alaska. We furnish all fishing gear for both fresh and saltwater fishing, but feel free to bring your lucky rod and reel or whatever else you desire. Fishing licenses are available separately through the lodge.

We also have an advantage over inland locations by having the North Pacific's bounty of seafood at our disposal, which also makes for first-class dining. And if saltwater fishing isn’t something a member of your party is interested in or you want a day off the water, we have so many other options available involving all of the wildlife and natural beauty that Alaska has to offer.
